Music Release Promotion Checklist for Independent Artists
Plan a release campaign with a practical checklist covering your audience, assets, outreach, budget and reporting.
Start with a release date and a realistic goal.
A release plan should state what is coming out, when it will be available and which audience you want to reach. Choose an objective you can assess, such as relevant press coverage, newsletter sign-ups or engagement from a defined audience. Avoid treating a stream target as a guaranteed outcome.
Prepare a complete set of release materials.
Keep a working listening link, release information, artist biography, approved photos and contact details together. Check that the song title, credits and release date agree across the materials. Make links accessible to the intended recipient and identify any embargo clearly.
Choose the right outreach routes.
Research publications and curators that cover your genre. Follow each submission policy and explain briefly why the release fits. A paid agency campaign and an editorial decision are different things: agree on the work being delivered and do not assume outreach guarantees coverage.
Decide what the budget covers.
Separate creative assets, advertising spend and service fees. Confirm who approves copy and images, who answers enquiries and how campaign work will be reported. Keep your own website and release links current so an interested reader can take the next step.
Review the campaign after release.
Keep a record of work completed, published coverage and relevant traffic or enquiries. Compare the evidence with the original objective. Use the findings to improve the next release rather than drawing conclusions from one isolated number.
